چکیده

We present a theoretical investigation of the chemical reaction SrF + SrF → products, focusing on reactions at ultralow temperatures. We find that bond swapping SrF + SrF → Sr2 + F2 is energetically forbidden at these temperatures. Rather, the only energetically allowed reaction is SrF + SrF → SrF2 + Sr, and even then only singlet states of the SrF2 trimer can form. A calculation along a reduced reaction path demonstrates that this abstraction reaction is barrierless and proceeds by one SrF molecule “handing off” a fluorine atom to the other molecule.

A dipolar gas of ultracold molecules.

Ultracold polar molecular gases promise new directions and exciting applications in collisions and chemical reactions at ultralow energies, precision measurements, novel quantum phase transitions, and quantum information science. Here we briefly discuss key experimental requirements for observing strong dipole-dipole interactions in an ultracold dipolar gas of molecules. We then survey current ...

Controlling the quantum stereodynamics of ultracold bimolecular reactions

Molecular collisions in the quantum regime represent a new opportunity to explore chemical reactions. Recently, atom-exchange reactions were observed in a trapped ultracold gas of KRb molecules. In an external electric field, these polar molecules can easily be oriented and the exothermic and barrierless bimolecular reactions, KRb + KRb → K2 + Rb2, occur at a rate that rises steeply with increa...

Coherent control of ultracold photoassociation.

1. INTRODUCTION Photoassociation, forming molecules from ultracold atoms using laser light, is a prime example of coherent control: The process is complex and poses many challenges, yet typically the molecular structure is simple enough to identify pathways for control. Laser cooling schemes that work for atoms 1−5 tend to fail for molecules, mainly due to the presence of many near-resonance li...

Strong dependence of ultracold chemical rates on electric dipole moments

We use the quantum threshold laws combined with a classical capture model to provide an analytical estimate of the chemical quenching cross sections and rate coefficients of two colliding particles at ultralow temperatures. We apply this quantum threshold model (QT model) to indistinguishable fermionic polar molecules in an electric field. At ultracold temperatures and in weak electric fields, ...

Scattering of ultracold molecules in the highly resonant regime

Compared to purely atomic collisions, ultracold molecular collisions potentially support a much larger number of Fano-Feshbach resonances due to the enormous number of rovibrational states available. In fact, for alkali-metal dimers we find that the resulting density of resonances cannot be resolved at all, even on the sub-μK temperature scale of ultracold experiments. As a result, all observab...
